Akira Tennou, an unremarkable thirty-five-year-old man, gets hit by a truck on his way home from work and, after a brief experience in some mystical limbo, wakes up in a gloomy forest. This forest is beset by a sinister black mist—his memories of his little sister’s lectures about fantasy novels tell him that it’s probably under an evil curse. He soon encounters one of the forest’s residents: an enormous silver wolf. At first the creature is hostile, but he finds that it’s been corrupted by the same black mist, and he only needs to cry "Purify!" to banish the curse and heal the wolf. Akira discovers that the residents of the forest are all animals, and once purified, they are far from feral beasts. His newfound magic allows him to speak to his new animal companions; he finds that they are intelligent and the rightful rulers of the forest. Akira decides to explore this new world, purifying the land and its inhabitants as he goes. But the source of the cursed mist can’t be far away…

Post-reincarnation magical powers in tow, Akira Tennou sets off to explore, acquire necessities, and purify the land of its sinister pall. His first priority is, of course, food–which will hopefully include something besides monster meat! Next is shelter, then eventually new clothes and other luxuries. But while Akira is busy excavating a seven-floor mansion out of a mountain, the other human denizens of this new world are engaged in less wholesome pursuits. Unlike Akira’s pacts with the ancient animal monarchs, not all power is predicated on kindness…

The king of Empras grows ever more anxious as Akira’s frequent surges of mana start to erode his stranglehold on power. He sends one of his knight brigades to investigate, only to discover just how quickly his territory is slipping through his fingers. How can the king resist a foe he doesn’t even know exists? One day, he stumbles across a new animal friend: Shuri, queen of the ant-like Anferfurmi clan. Though she initially doesn't get along with Koa or Spider Boss, she soon learns to be friends with the other forest monarchs. With the rise of even more ancient rulers, the forces opposing the evil curse are about to get even stronger.

Akira must find a way to help his furry friends beat the heat—and the unseen forces of darkness.
